‘Think family’ pilot

Islington has been named as one of the pilot areas for a ‘think family’ approach to supporting vulnerable families. Part of the aim is to ‘join up’ services to adults and children so that whole families get support (which is the way social services used to work before the childrens’ services bit was separated out in the wake of the Climbié case…). Islington is also to benefit from extra money to help families with young carers.

Any extra funding for social services is welcome. It’s an area with high and unpredictable costs, yet rarely comes top of the list when residents are consulted on priorities for spending council tax.

Let’s hope it does not turn out to be one of those pilots where just as the service is running nicely, the pilot funding is ended, leaving local social services, and Islington’s community, with even more demands on their funds.
