Tough at the top

Two press stories this week tell us much about Labour in government.

Firstly, Cabinet Office minister Liam Byrne, who issued a dossier to staff on how and when he likes his coffee, and other key matters of state. According to the Mail, he warns civil servants: ‘If I see things that are not of acceptable quality, I will blame you.’ Good to see a Minister ready to take real responsibility.

Talking of civil servants, Sir David Manning, who was Tony Blair’s foreign policy advisor in the runup to the Iraq war, has joined Lockheed Martin. From war-monger to arms dealer; a long way from the once-promised ethical foreign policy.

Lockheed‘s slogan is ‘we never forget who we’re working for’. If only the same was true of Labour….
