Ghost roads in Canonbury

There are lots of stories about satnavs leading drivers astray.

Including the school party who set out for Hampton Court Palace, only to end up in the alley, also called Hampton Court, behind Highbury & Islington station.

Now Google Maps has invented non-existent roads in Canonbury.

The spurious roads are called Shakespeare Close, Wickham Hill and Somes Close.

There’s a Somes Close in Stamford, Lincs; a Wickham Hill in Bristol; and lots of Shakespeare Closes, from North Yorkshire to Torquay: but none in Islington….

Perhaps they get the roads from the A-Z, which deliberately has ghost roads to help identify copyright infringements.

    Hi Helen

I didn’t know that about the A-Z. Must make it slightly less useful navigating round an unfamiliar part of town… But these ghost roads aren’t in my A-Z so not sure where Google found them!
