I’ve got feet up and a glass of wine to hand, resting after a long day at the Angel Canal Festival.
The Festival runs every year with the goodwill of an amazing team of volunteers, who organise the day from publicity, to setting up stalls, to all the logistics from first aid to road closures. Even on a rainy day like today, it’s deservedly popular; we had visitors at our stall from all over north London and even Ipswich.
This year the Mayor of Islington’s charity is ‘Islington Kids Afloat’, in partnership with Islington Narrowboat and Islington Boat Club – making this year’s Canal Festival an extra special occasion. And, in honour of his Polish heritage, there was a Polish flavour with beautifully-dressed Polish dancers as well as the traditional Morris troupe.
The Mayor was just one of the VIP visitors to our (Islington Lib Dems) stall – we also had visits from the Pearly Queens of Islington and Hackney, with the Pearly Prince of Islington; and London’s Lib Dem MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford.
Our own stall (Islington Lib Dems), like the festival itself, is a labour of love; so many people worked behind the scenes – baking cakes, making jam, preparing leaflets, designing banners, and giving up hours of their Sunday to help on the day.
We’ve got a great team – I hope they’re all enjoying a restful evening too.
